The Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, one of India's significant literary conclaves dedicated to Kannada language and culture, has not been convened for over a year past its scheduled date, raising concerns about the event's organization and implementation.
The last edition of the sammelana was held in December 2024 in Mandya district, with then Chief Minister Siddaramaiah presiding over the proceedings. At that time, the government demonstrated its commitment to the biennial event by earmarking ₹10 crore in the 2025-26 state budget for its organization.
Despite the budgetary allocation and the passage of considerable time, the Karnataka government has yet to announce dates, venue, or organizational details for the next edition. The delay underscores persistent challenges in coordinating logistics for the large-scale gathering, which typically attracts scholars, writers, and cultural enthusiasts from across the Kannada-speaking regions.
The sammelana serves as a platform for deliberations on Kannada literature, linguistic preservation, and cultural advancement. Regular conduct of the event is considered crucial for maintaining the momentum of literary discourse and supporting the wider Kannada cultural ecosystem in the state.
