Karnataka seeks lower Cauvery water release quota ahead of key committee meeting

Karnataka has formally appealed to the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) to lower the volume of water it must release to downstream states, according to sources familiar with the matter. The appeal represents the state's attempt to secure relief from existing water distribution obligations under the Cauvery Waters Disputes Tribunal award.

The timing of the petition is significant, arriving just ahead of a critical meeting of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee slated for September 8. The committee, which oversees implementation of water sharing agreements between Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and other basin states, is expected to review current water management protocols and allocation schedules.

Karnataka has historically sought adjustments to its water release commitments, citing variations in rainfall patterns and competing agricultural and domestic water needs.
