Karnataka is expected to expand its list of drought-affected taluks following ongoing field verification exercises across the state. Officials are currently assessing conditions in 23 remaining taluks to determine their drought status, with preliminary indications suggesting additional areas may qualify for drought relief classification.
The state has already declared 217 taluks out of a total of 240 as drought-hit, representing a significant portion of Karnataka's administrative divisions facing agricultural distress. The ground truthing exercise aims to ensure accurate assessment of drought conditions before any formal declarations are made for the remaining areas.
The verification process involves collecting data on rainfall patterns, water availability, crop damage, and other drought indicators across the unclassified taluks. Once the assessment is complete, the state is expected to formally notify the additional drought-affected areas, which would make them eligible for relief measures and government assistance programmes.
The expansion of the drought list comes amid concerns about inadequate monsoon precipitation and declining groundwater levels in several parts of Karnataka. Agricultural communities in drought-affected regions typically become eligible for various state and central government relief schemes, including crop insurance, debt waivers, and financial assistance.
