Sugarcane farmers across Karnataka have called for a bandh on Tuesday as part of their ongoing campaign to address grievances affecting the sector. The shutdown represents an intensification of pressure on state authorities to respond to the farmers' demands.
Farmers leader Chunappa Pujeri announced that the protest movement would move to the next phase with a jail bharo agitation beginning Sunday, signalling the union's intent to escalate civil disobedience if their concerns remain unaddressed. The jail bharo protest, a form of mass civil disobedience where participants deliberately court arrest, is traditionally used by farmers' organisations to draw heightened attention to their cause.
The bandh call reflects growing frustration within Karnataka's sugarcane farming community over issues that have long plagued the agricultural sector. Farmers have previously used such shutdown calls to mobilise support and force dialogue with policymakers at both state and national levels.
The announcement comes as agricultural distress continues to impact farming communities across South India, with sugarcane cultivators particularly vulnerable to market fluctuations and production challenges. State officials have not yet issued formal statements responding to the farmers' announcement.
