Karnataka to introduce AI training in schools from Class 6

Karnataka is set to broaden its artificial intelligence curriculum in government educational institutions, with Chief Minister D K Shivakumar instructing officials to extend AI training programmes to Class 6 onwards. The directive, issued on Monday, seeks to equip younger students with foundational knowledge of emerging technologies that are increasingly shaping the economy and workforce.

The expansion of the AI curriculum comes as part of efforts to modernise education delivery and prepare students for technology-driven careers. Shivakumar has asked the Information Technology department to work in coordination with private companies to develop and implement the programme across government schools in the state.

The move reflects growing recognition among Indian policymakers of the need to introduce technology education early in the school curriculum. By introducing AI concepts at the middle school level, Karnataka aims to build awareness and basic competency in students before they progress to higher education.

Details regarding the curriculum structure, training materials, and timeline for implementation are expected to be finalised through consultations between government agencies and private sector stakeholders. The initiative will require teacher training and resource allocation to ensure effective delivery across multiple schools in the state.
