Karnataka to publish draft electoral rolls; over 1 crore voters face exclusion

Karnataka's State Information and Records (SIR) office has scheduled the publication of draft electoral rolls for August 24, marking a significant contraction in the state's registered voter base. The revision will exclude over 1.07 crore voters from the electoral registers, according to the announcement.

Bengaluru, the state capital and largest urban centre, will experience the most dramatic change. The city's current electoral roll comprises over 1.03 crore voters, but the draft list will trim this to just 56.11 lakh registered voters. This substantial reduction reflects efforts to update and clean voter rolls by removing duplicate entries, deceased voters, and those who have shifted residence.

The publication of draft rolls is a standard procedure in electoral management, allowing citizens to file objections and corrections before final rolls are prepared. Eligible voters can challenge exclusions or request inclusion during the specified objection period. The final electoral rolls will be published after the objection and correction phase concludes.
