Kenya's Olympic marathon champion Jepchirchir faces provisional doping ban

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced the provisional suspension of Jepchirchir after detecting EPO, a blood-boosting agent that enhances oxygen-carrying capacity, in an out-of-competition sample taken prior to the Australian marathon event where she won the race.

EPO is prohibited under World Athletics anti-doping regulations and is commonly used to increase endurance performance. The substance remains detectable in the body for extended periods, and its presence in pre-competition testing raises questions about potential violations during the competitive period.

Jepchirchir, who claimed Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020 and has established herself as one of the world's elite distance runners, now faces a formal hearing before the AIU to address the findings. The provisional suspension bars her from competing pending the outcome of the investigation.

The case adds to ongoing concerns about doping in distance running, a sport that has faced repeated integrity challenges in recent years. Athletes found to have committed anti-doping violations face potential sanctions ranging from suspension to lifetime bans, depending on the circumstances and their cooperation with authorities.
