Kerala advocates seek legal shield against assault, intimidation

A forum representing Kerala's legal community has put forward a draft bill designed to safeguard advocates and their associates from workplace violence and harassment. The proposed Keralam Advocates Protection Bill, 2021, addresses growing concerns over the safety of legal professionals and support staff in the state.

The bill seeks to shield advocates, their family members and office employees from assault, criminal force, intimidation and threats. Proponents argue that members of the legal profession face particular risks due to the nature of their work, which can involve contentious matters and disputes.

Under the proposed legislation, persons found guilty of offences against advocates or their associates would face imprisonment stretching up to five years, along with monetary penalties of ₹1 lakh. The framework aims to provide both deterrence and compensation for victims of such incidents.

The move reflects wider efforts across Indian states to establish dedicated legal protections for judicial officers and legal practitioners. Advocates have increasingly highlighted incidents of violence and intimidation affecting their ability to practice law without fear.
