Kerala allocates ₹32 crore for overseas worker welfare pensions

The Kerala government has approved a ₹32 crore allocation for its 'Pravasi' welfare pension scheme, with disbursements timed ahead of the upcoming Onam celebrations. The initiative underscores the state's commitment to supporting its significant migrant worker population during the festive season.

Under the scheme, Keralites employed outside the state receive monthly pension assistance calibrated according to their location. Those working abroad receive ₹3,500 per month, while individuals employed in other Indian states or those who have returned to Kerala are eligible for ₹3,000 monthly.

The pension programme reflects Kerala's economic reliance on remittances from its diaspora workforce, a critical source of income for many families across the state. The scheme's expansion and timely funding demonstrate government efforts to maintain social safety nets for migrant populations.

Onam, the major harvest festival celebrated across Kerala typically in August or September, holds significant cultural importance for Keralites both within the state and abroad. The timing of the pension disbursement ensures migrant workers can participate in festive celebrations with their families, whether through direct visits or financial support sent home.
