Kerala allocates funds to complete hill station capacity study

The Kerala government has sanctioned ₹30 lakh to advance its carrying-capacity study of major hill stations, a project designed to manage the environmental footprint of tourism in the state's mountainous regions.

The research initiative, which examines destinations such as Wayanad and Idukki, seeks to determine sustainable visitor thresholds and evaluate how existing infrastructure can accommodate tourist flows. Officials say the assessment will help establish guidelines for managing mass tourism while preserving the ecological integrity of these hill station areas.

The carrying-capacity framework is expected to inform policy decisions on visitor management, infrastructure development, and conservation measures across Kerala's premier hill tourism destinations. By quantifying environmental limits and assessing current infrastructural adequacy, the study aims to prevent degradation of these sensitive ecosystems while balancing economic benefits from tourism.
