Kerala Assembly approves SARAL Bill despite opposition concerns over land use

The Kerala Assembly approved the SARAL Bill on Wednesday despite strong objections from the opposition Left Democratic Front and independent MLA G. Sudhakaran, who raised concerns about potential ecological damage. The legislation is designed to expedite the issuance of licences and permits for industrial projects by creating a faster approval mechanism. Industries Minister defended the Bill as a measure to accelerate the clearance process for industrial ventures, asserting it would not undermine existing regulatory frameworks. However, critics contend the new system could create administrative redundancy and potentially circumvent established environmental safeguards. Sudhakaran, backed by the United Democratic Front opposition alliance, warned that the Bill could facilitate large-scale destruction of paddy fields, wetlands and forestland across the state. He argued the proposed system could enable rapid industrial development without adequate environmental oversight. The legislation is intended to complement rather than replace the existing single-window clearance system for industrial projects in Kerala. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan countered the opposition's claims, stating the Bill would not create a parallel administrative structure but would instead optimise the existing approval process. The passage of the Bill follows weeks of debate over balancing industrial growth with environmental protection in the state.
