Kerala Assembly row over fence removals; Opposition challenges govt claims

Opposition members in the Kerala Assembly staged a walkout on Wednesday after the government rejected their adjournment motion seeking a discussion on the hardships faced by farmers and residents in Chinnakkanal following the removal of fences. The controversy stems from an order issued by the Idukki Collector on September 23 that triggered widespread concern among the local population. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) had moved the adjournment motion to raise concerns about the impact of the directive on agricultural lands and residential properties in the region. Forest Minister and Revenue Minister addressed the House, emphasising that the government had only dismantled illegal or unauthorised boundary fences as part of enforcement operations. Officials argued that the action was consistent with existing regulations and that legitimate, authorised structures were not targeted. However, the opposition disputed this characterisation, alleging that the removals had caused undue hardship to farmers and residents who claimed their fences were lawfully erected. The walkout underscores the ongoing tension between the state government and opposition parties over land management and enforcement policies in sensitive agricultural areas of Kerala.
