Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Satheesan announced ambitious plans to transform Muziris into an international heritage tourism destination, positioning the ancient port as a major draw for visitors to the state.
As part of the comprehensive Muziris Heritage Project, the government intends to significantly expand water taxi and kayak services across the backwaters. The expansion will extend beyond the main Muziris area to include nearby destinations such as Ezhikkara, Kottappuram, and Azheekode, creating an interconnected network of water-based tourism experiences.
The initiative aims to leverage Kerala's rich maritime history and natural backwater systems to attract international tourists. Muziris, known as an ancient trading port with historical significance dating back centuries, has become the focal point of Kerala's efforts to develop heritage tourism infrastructure.
The expansion of water transport services is expected to boost accessibility and enhance visitor experience across the region's backwaters. By connecting multiple heritage sites and scenic locations through coordinated water taxi and kayak operations, authorities hope to create a comprehensive tourism circuit that appeals to both domestic and international travelers seeking authentic Kerala experiences.
