Kerala CM denies plans to rename Kochi Metro Rail Limited

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan on Thursday dismissed reports of plans to rename Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) as Keralam Metro Rail Limited, stating that no such decision has been taken by the government.

The clarification came after KMRL authorities released a press statement proposing the name change without consulting with the state government first. Satheesan expressed displeasure over the autonomous body's unilateral move to issue the release without seeking prior approval or coordination with the administration.

The CM's statement underscores the disconnect between the metro rail authority and the government, highlighting procedural lapses in how major administrative decisions are communicated. Officials are expected to maintain coordination with the state government before making public announcements on matters of policy or organizational restructuring.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited, which operates the rapid transit system serving the Ernakulathappan metropolitan area, continues to function under its current official designation. The incident has raised questions about the governance structure and decision-making processes within the autonomous authority.
