Kerala CM Seeks Centre's Aid for Coconut Value-Addition Park

Kerala's Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has reached out to the Union government for assistance in developing a specialized coconut value-addition park, marking a significant push to revitalize the state's traditional agricultural sector.

The proposed facility would serve as a hub for processing and value addition of coconut products, addressing longstanding challenges in Kerala's coconut farming industry. The Chief Minister has emphasized the critical need to transition the sector away from conventional farming practices toward more efficient, science-backed cultivation methods.

Satheesan has underscored the importance of restructuring coconut farming through adoption of planned plantation models and scientific approaches. The shift is intended to enhance productivity and market competitiveness while making the sector economically viable for farmers who have faced declining returns in recent years.

The value-addition park, if established with central support, would enable local producers to develop higher-value products such as coconut oil, copra, coir, and coconut-based derivatives. This would help create additional employment opportunities while strengthening the supply chain from farm to market.

The initiative reflects broader efforts in Kerala to modernize its agricultural base and ensure sustainable income for farming communities dependent on traditional crops.
