Kerala CM to unveil ₹93-crore coastal defence scheme for Pozhiyoor

The Kerala government is set to roll out an ambitious coastal protection project in Pozhiyoor, with an outlay of ₹93.22 crore aimed at providing the region with comprehensive safeguards against marine erosion and tidal threats. The initiative represents a significant investment in the state's ongoing efforts to protect its coastline from the escalating impacts of sea-level rise and extreme weather events.

The multi-faceted project will employ a combination of proven coastal engineering techniques to fortify Pozhiyoor's defences. The strategy includes the construction of groynes to manage sediment transport and reduce wave action, installation of a reinforced seawall to provide a barrier against high tides and storm surges, and deployment of tetrapods—large concrete structures that dissipate wave energy through their unique design.

Pozhiyoor, located in Thiruvananthapuram district, has faced persistent challenges related to coastal erosion, threatening both livelihoods and settlements in the area. The comprehensive approach adopted for this project reflects evolving best practices in coastal protection, combining structural interventions with scientific understanding of marine dynamics.

The launch of the scheme underscores the state government's commitment to addressing climate-related vulnerabilities affecting coastal communities.
