Kerala CM warns social media 'ratings race' erodes journalistic standards

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Satheesan on Friday raised concerns about the growing influence of social media on traditional journalism, warning that established news organisations risk undermining their credibility in pursuit of viral content and audience metrics.

Addressing the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club, Satheesan noted that despite their institutional heritage and editorial traditions, mainstream media outlets are increasingly adopting trends originating from social platforms. This shift, he cautioned, threatens to erode the professional standards that have long defined quality journalism in the region.

The Chief Minister's remarks underscore growing tensions between legacy media and digital platforms, particularly regarding editorial decision-making and content prioritisation. His comments reflect broader concerns across India about how competitive pressures from social media algorithms and viewership metrics are reshaping newsroom priorities.

The Thiruvananthapuram Press Club's 60-year celebration provided the occasion for Satheesan to emphasise the continuing importance of credible, principled journalism as a counterbalance to sensationalism and trend-chasing in the media landscape.
