Kerala doctor loses ₹1.19 crore in digital arrest fraud; suspect held

A medical practitioner from Nileswaram in Kasaragod district lost ₹1.19 crore to an organized digital arrest scam, becoming the latest victim of a fraud scheme that has targeted numerous Indians in recent years. The accused, identified during attempts to board a flight from Hyderabad, has been taken into custody by law enforcement agencies.

The fraudulent operation unfolded between November 24 and December 17, 2025, when the accused and his associates orchestrated a coordinated campaign of phone calls and WhatsApp video calls targeting the doctor. Using social engineering tactics characteristic of digital arrest scams, the perpetrators convinced the victim that he faced legal complications, prompting him to transfer substantial sums of money.

Digital arrest scams have emerged as a significant concern across India, with scammers impersonating law enforcement or government officials to pressurize victims into transferring funds. The scammers typically create a sense of urgency and fear, claiming the victim's involvement in illicit activities or legal violations. The interception of the accused at Hyderabad airport signals increased vigilance by authorities in tracking and apprehending perpetrators of such fraud schemes.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing as police work to identify additional members of the criminal network and recover the defrauded amount. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious of unsolicited calls and video calls from individuals claiming to be government representatives.
