Kerala doubles compensation for wildlife attack deaths and crop damage

Kerala's government has committed to doubling compensation payouts for deaths and crop losses caused by wildlife attacks, signalling a significant increase in support for affected citizens. The move reflects a broader policy shift in addressing the state's persistent human-wildlife conflict crisis.

Forest Minister Shibu Baby John stated that wildlife conflict management would no longer rest solely with the Forest department. Instead, the government will pursue a coordinated intervention strategy involving the Agriculture and Revenue departments, recognizing the multifaceted nature of the problem.

The enhanced compensation scheme addresses long-standing grievances from communities living on the periphery of Kerala's forests, where encounters with elephants, wild boar, and other animals frequently result in fatalities and crop destruction. By increasing financial relief and integrating multiple departments, the state aims to provide more comprehensive support to vulnerable populations.

The coordinated approach signals an acknowledgment that wildlife conflict transcends forestry concerns, impacting agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods. Officials indicated that the three-department collaboration would enable better monitoring, prevention strategies, and faster compensation disbursement for affected farmers and families.
