Kerala Police has downgraded Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's security classification from Z+ to Y category, according to an official announcement by the state's security establishment. The move represents a significant reduction in the Chief Minister's personal protection cover, which had previously placed him at the highest security tier.
Under the revised security framework, the Governor and Chief Minister were previously assigned Z+ category protection, considered the most comprehensive security cover available. However, the new classification restructures this arrangement, with the Chief Minister now falling into the Y category.
The security reorganization also redefines protection levels for other senior state functionaries. State Ministers, the Speaker, and Deputy Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly will now receive Y category security with armed escort provisions. The changes reflect a recalibration of security assessments based on current threat evaluations and administrative priorities.
The Z+ category remains the highest security classification in India's security system and is typically reserved for individuals facing the most critical threat assessments. The specific reasons behind Kerala Police's decision to downgrade the Chief Minister's security status were not immediately detailed in official communications.
