Kerala electricity board seeks regulatory approval for additional power purchases

The Kerala State Electricity Board has filed an application seeking approval from the state regulatory authority to increase its power procurement portfolio. The move reflects the board's efforts to ensure adequate electricity supply to meet consumer demand across Kerala's grid.

According to the application, private power suppliers have quoted tariffs ranging from ₹9 per unit upwards for the additional electricity supply being considered. These rates will form part of the board's overall power procurement strategy as it balances supply requirements with cost considerations.

The KSEB's push for expanded procurement comes as the state grapples with managing its energy needs through a mix of renewable and conventional sources. The board sources power from various suppliers including hydroelectric projects, thermal plants, and renewable energy facilities.

The regulatory authority will now examine the board's procurement proposal to ensure the pricing remains competitive and justified. This approval process is a standard requirement under India's electricity regulatory framework, which mandates transparent and competitive procurement mechanisms for state distribution companies.
