Kerala faces power crisis as peak demand surges to record 5,400 MW

The Kerala government has initiated urgent steps to manage an escalating power crisis, with peak demand reaching 5,400 megawatts on Thursday—a significant jump compared to the 4,224 MW average demand recorded in September of the previous year. Chief Minister chaired an emergency meeting to coordinate immediate relief measures and long-term strategies to address the shortfall.

The sharp increase in electricity demand has strained the state's generating capacity, prompting authorities to consider various contingency measures. Officials attributed the surge partly to seasonal factors and increased consumption across industrial and domestic sectors.

The Kerala State Electricity Board's chairperson and managing director announced plans to enhance the notification system for communicating scheduled power cuts to consumers. The expanded mechanism aims to provide advance warning to residents and businesses, allowing them to plan accordingly during periods of restricted supply.

The state's power sector faces mounting pressure as demand continues to outpace available generation capacity. While the government works on immediate measures to mitigate shortages, focus remains on identifying sustainable solutions to bridge the gap between supply and demand in the coming months.
