Kerala Fisheries Minister pledges welfare focus, staffing improvements

Fisheries Minister V.E. Abdul Gafoor has directed the state's Fisheries and Harbour Engineering departments to adopt a welfare-centric strategy while strengthening operational efficiency. Speaking during a district-level review meeting held in Ponnani, Malappuram, Gafoor emphasized the need for immediate action to improve departmental performance across the region.

The minister committed to filling vacant positions in key roles within the Fisheries department, identifying staffing shortages as a critical impediment to effective service delivery. The vacancy issue has reportedly affected the department's ability to execute welfare schemes and maintain infrastructure in the district.

The review meeting, which brought together senior officials from both the Fisheries and Harbour Engineering departments, focused on assessing current challenges and outlining remedial measures. Officials discussed mechanisms to enhance coordination between the two departments and streamline administrative processes to better serve the fishing community.

The Malappuram district, with its significant maritime resources and fishing population, has been identified as a priority area for departmental restructuring and capacity building initiatives aimed at ensuring sustainable development and improved welfare benefits for fishers.
