Kerala gears up for 72nd Nehru Trophy Boat Race

Kerala's most celebrated water sports event, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, is set to commence on August 22 with comprehensive arrangements finalized for the 72nd edition. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan will formally inaugurate the competition at 2 p.m., capping a day of preliminary heats.

The morning schedule will begin at 11 a.m. with heats for smaller boat categories, building momentum towards the ceremonial launch in the afternoon. A total of 71 boats have been registered to participate in the event, with 22 of these being the iconic snake boats that form the centrepiece of Kerala's aquatic racing tradition.

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race remains one of India's most significant sporting events, drawing participants and spectators from across the state and beyond. Held annually on Kerala's backwaters, the race showcases the region's unique maritime culture and traditional boating expertise that has been refined over centuries.

Organizers have confirmed that all logistical arrangements are in place to ensure the smooth conduct of both the preliminary heats and the main competition. The event continues to serve as a major platform for Kerala's boat racing heritage and remains a highlight in the state's sporting calendar.
