Kerala Government Establishes Protocol for Humane Euthanasia of Rabid Stray Dogs

The Kerala government has formalized guidelines for the humane euthanasia of stray dogs afflicted with rabies or terminal conditions that cannot be treated. The move aims to address the challenge of managing dangerous and suffering animals while adhering to animal welfare standards.

Under the new framework, stray dog management committees will be established at the local body level across Kerala. These committees will be responsible for assessing cases, determining which animals warrant mercy killing, and overseeing the implementation of euthanasia procedures in accordance with established protocols.

The decision reflects efforts to balance public health concerns with animal welfare considerations. Rabid dogs pose a significant risk to human populations, particularly in densely populated areas, while the protocol aims to ensure that euthanasia is carried out only when animals are suffering from incurable conditions or pose an imminent threat.

The standard operating procedure is expected to provide clarity on the identification criteria, approval processes, and humane methods to be employed in such cases.
