Kerala government hospitals brace for service disruptions after NHM staff layoffs

Kerala's public healthcare system faces potential disruptions following the termination of 1,495 temporary job contracts under the National Health Mission (NHM) effective from October 31. The mass layoff has raised concerns about the ability of government hospitals to maintain current service levels, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where these contractual workers form a significant portion of the workforce.

Kozhikode district has borne the brunt of the layoffs, with at least 99 positions eliminated, according to official records. Healthcare workers, many of whom have served in various capacities including nursing, laboratory support, and administrative roles, now face unemployment without clarity on alternative placement or severance arrangements.

The terminations come amid ongoing debates about the sustainability and funding mechanisms of the NHM, a centrally-sponsored scheme designed to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the country. State health officials have expressed concern that the sudden withdrawal of contractual staff could compromise routine hospital operations and patient care quality.

The Kerala government has not yet announced contingency measures or whether it plans to absorb any of the affected workers into alternative healthcare schemes. Health worker unions have called for an immediate review of the termination orders and urged both state and central authorities to find viable solutions to protect essential healthcare services.
