Former Kerala Governor Arlekar has forwarded a recommendation to the President seeking the removal of the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) chairperson, setting off a political confrontation in the state. The move has drawn immediate criticism from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and other opposition Left Democratic Front parties, which have questioned its constitutional validity.
The opposition has demanded that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan clarify his government's position on the recommendation and the circumstances that led to it. The CPI(M) has called for an explanation on whether the state government was consulted before the recommendation was forwarded to the President's office.
Meanwhile, several ministers from the ruling United Democratic Front coalition have expressed support for the governor's action, signaling backing within the government. However, the opposition has contended that such a move circumvents established constitutional procedures for addressing issues related to PSC leadership.
The controversy has highlighted ongoing tensions over governance and institutional autonomy in Kerala. The matter is expected to dominate political discourse in the state in coming days as various parties articulate their positions on the propriety and legality of the recommendation.
