The Kerala High Court on Thursday granted relief to former DGP Tomin J Thachankary by suspending his four-year jail term in connection with a disproportionate assets case. The suspension was ordered following consideration of an appeal filed against the conviction handed down by the Vigilance court.
Thachankary had been convicted for accumulating assets beyond his known sources of income during his tenure as the state's top police official. The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau had initiated proceedings against him based on allegations that his financial holdings were disproportionate to his legitimate earnings.
The High Court's decision to suspend the sentence pending final disposal of the appeal provides temporary relief to the former police chief. The suspension does not constitute an acquittal but rather halts the implementation of the custodial sentence while legal proceedings continue.
The case is likely to proceed through further appellate proceedings, where both the prosecution and defence will present their respective arguments regarding the conviction and sentencing.
