A 106-page audit report has revealed substantial irregularities in the functioning of Kerala's Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), prompting sharp political reactions in the state assembly. The report documents that KIIFB expanded its workforce to 498 employees from just 40 sanctioned positions without obtaining requisite government authorization, raising questions about administrative oversight and budgetary controls.
The audit findings also highlight expenditures of Rs 203.72 crore directed toward publicity and promotional activities during a single period, a figure that has drawn criticism from opposition parties questioning the necessity and appropriateness of such spending by an infrastructure financing body.
Oppositional leaders have characterized the irregularities as emblematic of broader governance lapses, leveraging the report to challenge the state government's management of autonomous institutions. The revelations underscore concerns about whether financial and administrative controls at state-level entities are sufficiently robust to prevent unauthorized decisions and expenditures.
The findings have intensified scrutiny of KIIFB's operations at a time when Kerala continues to pursue significant infrastructure development initiatives. State authorities are expected to address the audit observations and clarify measures being taken to strengthen governance frameworks at the board.
