The Kerala health department on Wednesday observed World Mosquito Day with intensive anti-mosquito campaigns spanning urban and rural areas across the state. The drive aims to raise awareness about mosquito-borne diseases and mobilize collective action against vector breeding sites.
As part of the observance, health officials called upon households, schools, workplaces and other institutions to identify and eliminate potential breeding grounds. Stagnant water sources, clogged drains, and uncovered containers have been identified as primary areas requiring immediate attention.
The state health department emphasized that sustained community participation is essential to reduce mosquito populations and prevent disease transmission. Officials urged residents to maintain cleanliness around their premises and report suspected dengue, malaria and other vector-borne cases promptly to health authorities.
World Mosquito Day, observed annually on August 20, commemorates the discovery of the malaria parasite transmission cycle through mosquitoes. The global observance serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by mosquito-borne diseases in public health systems across tropical and subtropical regions.
The Kerala initiative comes as India continues to grapple with seasonal surges in dengue and other vector-borne illnesses. Health officials indicated that such coordinated campaigns would be sustained beyond the awareness day to maintain momentum in disease prevention efforts.
