Kerala launches comprehensive road safety mission to tackle fatalities

The Kerala government has rolled out an ambitious road safety mission designed to combat the rising toll of road fatalities across the state. The initiative represents a coordinated effort to address multiple factors contributing to accidents through both infrastructure upgrades and community engagement.

The mission encompasses several key components, including the modernisation of existing road networks and the systematic identification and remediation of accident-prone zones classified as 'black spots'. Authorities will prioritise the maintenance and replacement of damaged signboards, improving visibility and driver awareness along vulnerable stretches.

Infrastructure enhancements form a central pillar of the programme. Plans include the widening of zebra crossings to facilitate safer pedestrian passage and the establishment of designated safety zones demarcated through colour-coded road markings. These visual interventions are intended to alert drivers to high-risk areas and encourage compliance with safety protocols.

To amplify its outreach, the state has enlisted prominent support for the campaign. The initiative underscores Kerala's commitment to transforming road safety through a combination of engineering solutions and behavioural change initiatives, reflecting growing recognition of the need for comprehensive approaches to accident prevention across South Asian road networks.
