Kerala launches doorstep health screening drive ahead of World Stroke Day

Kerala's Health Minister K. Muraleedharan unveiled the logo of 'Hridayaragam' during a walkathon organised by the state Health Department to mark World Stroke Day on October 29, 2026. The initiative represents the government's commitment to decentralising healthcare delivery and making preventive cardiac screening accessible to citizens across the state.

The 'Hridayaragam' program is designed to address the rising burden of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in Kerala by bringing health checks to people's doorsteps. Rather than requiring residents to visit hospitals or clinics, the scheme will deploy trained health workers to conduct preliminary screenings in communities, enabling early detection of risk factors associated with strokes and heart attacks.

World Stroke Day, observed annually on October 29, aims to raise awareness about stroke prevention and management. Kerala's launch of this doorstep health initiative on the occasion underscores the state's focus on public health education and preventive medicine.

The doorstep screening model is expected to improve health outcomes by identifying at-risk individuals early, allowing for timely intervention and lifestyle modifications. Officials indicated the program would be rolled out across multiple districts, with emphasis on reaching underserved and remote areas where access to healthcare facilities remains limited.
