Kerala launches fresh cybercrime prevention drive with digital literacy push

Kerala is stepping up efforts to combat cybercrime through a multi-pronged approach under the 'Cyber Safe Kerala' initiative, recognizing that the state's renowned literacy rates have not translated into widespread digital literacy among residents. Senior officials have flagged this gap as a significant vulnerability, leaving even well-educated citizens exposed to sophisticated online fraud schemes. The disconnect between conventional and digital literacy has emerged as a key challenge in protecting the state's online population from evolving cyber threats.

As part of the initiative, Kerala Police will deploy a dedicated digital dashboard designed to enhance coordination and response mechanisms. The platform will enable authorities to track First Information Reports (FIRs) and public complaints related to cybercrime in real-time, facilitating faster investigation and resolution. The dashboard aims to create a centralized system for monitoring cyber incidents across the state, improving transparency and accountability in handling such cases.

The initiative reflects growing concern over the rising tide of cybercrime incidents in Kerala, where perpetrators have increasingly targeted financially secure individuals by exploiting gaps in their digital awareness. Officials stressed the need for comprehensive education campaigns alongside technological infrastructure to build resilience against online fraud. The state plans to couple its enforcement measures with awareness programs to equip citizens with knowledge about digital safety practices and common scam tactics.

The drive comes as cybercrime reports have surged across South India, with victims often losing significant sums to online fraudsters. By combining technology-driven monitoring with grassroots awareness campaigns, Kerala hopes to set a model for other states in addressing the cybercrime challenge more effectively.
