Kerala has initiated Operation Toofan, a comprehensive crackdown designed to trace illicit drug money flowing through modern digital payment systems including UPI transfers and cryptocurrency wallets. The operation represents a significant shift in narcotics enforcement, moving beyond traditional street-level arrests to target the financial infrastructure sustaining drug trafficking organisations across the state.
The operational framework focuses on three key pillars: dismantling supply chains at their source, identifying and prosecuting financiers who bankroll narcotics operations, and expanding rehabilitation programmes for drug users. By tracking digital payment trails, investigators aim to identify previously hidden links between traffickers, money launderers, and organised crime networks operating across state and national borders.
Authorities acknowledge that cryptocurrency and online payment systems have become preferred channels for drug traffickers to move proceeds while evading traditional financial oversight. The initiative will coordinate with banking regulators and cyber-crime units to monitor suspicious transactions and identify dormant wallets used to store illicit gains.
The enhanced focus on financial interdiction is expected to weaken the economic viability of drug trafficking enterprises. By cutting off funding sources, authorities believe the operation can reduce both supply and demand while creating pathways for treatment and social reintegration of addicted individuals caught in the drug economy.
