Kerala Left groups oppose higher education council's FYUGP review plans

Left organisations across Kerala have raised concerns over the state's higher education council's review proposals for the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP), calling for the retention of its existing academic framework.

The groups have urged the council to proceed cautiously with any modifications, warning that ill-considered changes could create conflicts with Outcome-Based Education (OBE) principles that currently govern undergraduate curricula. They also flagged potential violations of university autonomy provisions and statutory regulations that specifically govern the FYUGP structure.

The FYUGP, introduced to align Kerala's undergraduate education with global standards, has become a subject of debate among academic stakeholders. The Left organisations contend that the programme's current design balances pedagogical rigour with flexibility, allowing institutions to maintain academic independence while adhering to quality benchmarks.

The objections underscore broader concerns within academic circles about maintaining consistency in educational frameworks. The groups have emphasised that any review should involve comprehensive consultation with universities, faculty representatives and student bodies before implementation of significant changes.

The higher education council's review proposals remain under consideration as Kerala continues to evaluate its undergraduate education strategy.
