Youth Democratic Front (DYFI) members staged a protest in Kannur that escalated into an attack on the official vehicle carrying Kerala Minister O.J. Janeesh, marking the latest flashpoint in regional political tensions. The assault took place as Janeesh was traveling to Kasaragod after concluding participation in a programme organized by the Archaeology department.
Activists forcibly stopped the minister's vehicle during the demonstration, with the protest reflecting deepening friction between the state government and opposition political groups in the district. The DYFI, the youth wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has been mobilizing against state policies in recent weeks.
The incident highlights mounting political polarization in northern Kerala, where competing factions have increasingly resorted to aggressive tactics during demonstrations. State police officials did not immediately comment on whether any formal complaints had been registered or arrests made in connection with the vehicle attack.
The attack comes amid broader political instability across Kerala's northern districts, where frequent protests and counter-demonstrations have strained public order. Officials indicated that security arrangements would be reviewed for senior government functionaries traveling through volatile regions.
