Kerala, NTPC to develop 2,000-MW battery storage facility at Kayamkulam

Kerala and the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) have agreed to collaborate on setting up a 2,000-megawatt battery energy storage system at Kayamkulam in the southern state, marking a significant step toward enhancing the region's renewable energy capacity. The partnership was finalised during a meeting between Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and senior NTPC officials in the national capital.

The battery storage facility is designed to support Kerala's growing renewable energy infrastructure by enabling efficient energy management and grid stability. Energy storage systems of this scale play a crucial role in addressing intermittency challenges associated with solar and wind power generation, allowing states to maximise the utilisation of clean energy sources.

During the meeting, Satheesan also pressed for the establishment of a dedicated power plant in Kerala, seeking to strengthen the state's energy security and reduce dependence on power imports. The discussions underscored Kerala's commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio amid India's broader transition toward renewable and sustainable power generation.

The Kayamkulam location, already home to significant energy infrastructure, positions Kerala favourably for implementing this large-capacity storage project. NTPC's involvement brings both technical expertise and resources to expedite the development, with the initiative expected to align with national renewable energy targets and support Kerala's own sustainability goals.
