Ezhikkara panchayat in Kerala is launching an ambitious community-driven project to address the recurring threat of tidal flooding that impacts the region. Named Resilient Lanka, the initiative represents a departure from conventional infrastructure-focused approaches, instead emphasizing grassroots participation and technological innovation.
The project will be jointly implemented by Equinoct, a Kochi-based firm specializing in community-sourced environmental and climate-modelling technology solutions, and the newly established Happiness Project foundation. The panchayat will provide overall supervision and coordination for the initiative.
The collaboration seeks to harness local knowledge alongside advanced technological tools to develop context-specific strategies for managing tidal flooding. By engaging community members in the problem-solving process, the project aims to build resilience while ensuring solutions are practical and locally appropriate.
The initiative reflects growing recognition in Kerala of the need for adaptive approaches to climate-related challenges. As coastal regions face increasing flooding risks, community-led models like Resilient Lanka offer a framework for combining technological capability with the insights of residents who understand local geographical and environmental conditions firsthand.
The project's outcomes could provide a replicable model for other panchayats and communities across Kerala and South Asia facing similar climate-related vulnerabilities.
