Kerala panel seeks improved embassy access for overseas nationals

The Kerala Assembly Committee on the Welfare of Non-Resident Keralites held discussions in Kozhikode on Tuesday to examine barriers faced by expatriates and explore mechanisms to facilitate quicker contact with Indian diplomatic missions.

Among the key issues examined were the challenges non-resident Keralites encounter when seeking assistance from embassies and consulates, particularly regarding access and response times. The committee recognised the need for improved communication infrastructure to bridge these gaps.

The panel also reviewed welfare entitlements available to expatriates through government schemes and examined pending complaints related to welfare pensions for overseas nationals. Officials sought to identify bottlenecks in the disbursement and administration of these benefits.

The sitting reflected growing concern over the difficulties faced by Kerala's substantial diaspora in securing timely support from Indian diplomatic representatives abroad. The committee's findings are expected to inform recommendations for enhanced coordination between state-level welfare authorities and foreign service officials.

Experts estimate over four million Keralites work overseas, making efficient embassy access and welfare delivery critical administrative priorities for the state.
