Kerala reclaims 120+ acres from legacy waste dumpsites

Kerala has made substantial progress in reclaiming land from its decades-old dumpsites, with remediation work now complete at 29 of the state's 59 legacy landfills. The cleanup initiative has restored more than 120 acres of land that had been occupied by waste accumulation over several decades, addressing a longstanding environmental challenge across the region.

The remediation programme focuses on stabilizing and rehabilitating sites that have accumulated municipal and industrial waste over years. Completed projects have involved soil treatment, waste compaction, and preparation of sites for potential reuse or environmental restoration. State environmental authorities have prioritized sites based on their environmental impact and proximity to populated areas.

With work still ongoing at approximately 30 additional landfill sites, the state continues efforts to manage its historical waste management challenges. The reclamation project represents part of broader initiatives to improve waste management infrastructure and environmental standards across Kerala, where rapid urbanization has previously strained disposal facilities.

Successful remediation of legacy sites is expected to free up land for public use while reducing environmental contamination from older dumpsites. State officials indicate that the pace of remediation will accelerate in coming years as more sites enter the cleanup phase.
