Kerala research centre awarded ₹35 lakh to study parental grief in autism

The Keralam Child Development Centre has secured ₹35 lakh in funding to conduct an in-depth research project exploring the emotional and psychological experiences of parents raising children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The three-year initiative will focus on understanding chronic sorrow—the ongoing grief parents experience—and examining the coping strategies families employ to manage these challenges.

The research project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how parental mental health is affected by raising a child with ASD and what interventions or support systems prove most effective. By documenting coping mechanisms and resilience factors, the study seeks to inform better psychosocial support services for families navigating autism-related challenges.

The grant underscores growing recognition of the need to address mental health and emotional wellbeing within families affected by developmental disorders. Parents of children with autism often face significant stress, social isolation, and emotional burden that extends far beyond the initial diagnosis period. This research will contribute valuable insights into how support systems can be strengthened across Kerala and potentially other regions in India.

The findings from the centre's investigation are expected to inform policy recommendations and clinical practice guidelines for mental health professionals working with ASD families, ultimately improving access to tailored psychological interventions and community support networks.
