Kerala's AIIMS demand remains unfulfilled, says Union Minister Gopi

Union Minister and Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi has made establishing an AIIMS institute in Kerala a precondition for his electoral engagement, reflecting frustration over the state's delayed demand for the premier medical institution. Gopi criticized successive governments led by the Left Democratic Front and United Democratic Front for neglecting what he termed a critical healthcare infrastructure priority for Kerala.

The minister's statement underscores the political significance of the AIIMS proposal, which has remained on Kerala's wishlist despite repeated representations to the Union government. Medical professionals and political leaders across party lines have highlighted the shortage of advanced medical facilities in the state, with an AIIMS establishment viewed as essential for bridging this gap.

Gopi's position reflects a broader concern among Kerala's political establishment about the state's healthcare infrastructure compared with other regions. The absence of an AIIMS facility, despite Kerala's status as a relatively developed state with strong health indicators, has become a contentious issue in state politics.

The Union minister's remarks come amid ongoing discussions between state and central authorities regarding the allocation of AIIMS institutions across India. Kerala, with a population exceeding 33 million and established medical education infrastructure, has long advocated for inclusion in the central government's AIIMS expansion programme. The establishment of such an institution could significantly enhance tertiary care services and medical research capabilities in the region.
