Kerala teacher's mobile chemistry kit ignites student experimentation

Abhilash Thiruvoth, an educator at Government Vocational Higher Secondary School for Girls in Nadakkavu, has developed 'Rasappetti'—a compact, mobile chemistry laboratory designed to democratize access to practical scientific education. The innovative system consolidates fundamental equipment and chemical reagents typically found in traditional laboratory settings into a portable format that can be transported between classrooms.

The initiative addresses a persistent challenge in secondary education across India, where many schools lack adequately equipped laboratories or face logistical constraints in conducting regular chemistry practicals. By bringing experimental apparatus directly to students, the system reduces barriers to hands-on learning and enables educators to conduct demonstrations and experiments within regular classroom periods.

Rasappetti contains a carefully curated selection of basic chemicals and apparatus essential for foundational chemistry experiments aligned with standard curriculum requirements. The portable design allows teachers to conduct multiple experiments without requiring students to move to a centralized laboratory facility, thereby optimizing instructional time and accommodating larger student groups simultaneously.

The initiative has demonstrated measurable impact in enhancing student engagement with chemistry concepts through practical application. By enabling regular experimental work rather than theory-focused instruction, the system has reportedly increased student interest in pursuing science subjects and pursuing laboratory-based learning methodologies.
