Kerala to extend Go Express mart hours amid food kit shortage

Kerala's Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob said the state would increase operating hours at Go Express marts run by the Kerala State Cooperative Apex Consumers' Federation (Supplyco) to improve accessibility of food kits for the economically disadvantaged.

The decision comes after reports of persistent non-availability of food kits among people classified in the extremely poor category across the state. Jacob acknowledged the supply gaps and indicated the government was actively working to address distribution challenges.

"We are examining whether food essentials can be supplied through kits or other alternative mechanisms," Jacob said, signalling flexibility in the state's approach to public food distribution. The minister's statement suggests the government is open to exploring different models beyond the current kit-based system to ensure vulnerable populations receive adequate supplies.

The extended hours at Go Express outlets are expected to reduce congestion and provide beneficiaries with greater flexibility in accessing food items during the week. The government has not yet announced a specific revised schedule or timeline for implementing the longer operating hours.
