Kerala to Launch First Dedicated Wellness Hub for Gig Workers

Kerala's labour ministry will open the state's first GIGON wellness hub, a dedicated facility designed to serve the growing population of gig and platform workers. Labour Minister Bindhu Krishna will formally inaugurate the centre, located near the Press Club in the state capital, marking a significant step towards improving working conditions in the gig economy sector.

The facility responds to sustained advocacy by gig workers' unions and platform labour organisations, which have repeatedly called for designated spaces where workers can rest, freshen up, and access basic amenities during their working hours. The hub is expected to provide essential services including rest areas and washroom facilities for delivery personnel, ride-sharing drivers, and other independent contractors operating through digital platforms.

The GIGON initiative reflects growing recognition of the challenges faced by gig workers, who often lack access to workplace facilities that traditional employees enjoy. The wellness hub represents an attempt to address gaps in worker welfare and improve the overall well-being of those engaged in the rapidly expanding digital economy.

With gig work becoming an increasingly significant employment mode across India, the launch of such facilities in major cities has gained traction among state governments and worker advocacy groups.
