Kerala to lease land to Cochin Shipyard for ₹5,000 crore project

Kerala has agreed to lease 18.16 acres of land at Ramanthuruth to Cochin Shipyard Limited for development of an advanced ship block building facility, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced. The strategic allocation represents the state government's commitment to expanding the shipbuilding sector, a key pillar of Kerala's industrial economy.
Cochin Shipyard has committed an investment of ₹5,000 crore for the project, which will focus on construction of modular ship blocks—a critical component in modern shipbuilding. The facility is designed to enhance the shipyard's production capacity and enable it to undertake larger and more complex maritime projects.
According to the Chief Minister, the project is anticipated to generate direct employment for skilled workers and engineers, while creating a multiplier effect through indirect employment opportunities across supply chains and ancillary sectors. The development is expected to position Kerala as a competitive hub for advanced shipbuilding in South Asia.
The Ramanthuruth facility will complement Cochin Shipyard's existing operations and modernize its infrastructure to align with global standards in ship block fabrication. The project comes as India seeks to reduce dependence on international shipyards for major vessel construction and strengthen domestic maritime industrial capabilities.
