Kerala to mandate hazard perception test for driving licence applicants
Kerala will introduce a hazard perception test as a mandatory requirement for driving licence aspirants, requiring candidates to clear the assessment within 30 days of passing their learner's test.

The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department will roll out a new hazard perception test as part of its revised driving licence examination procedure. The test aims to enhance road safety by ensuring that applicants demonstrate their ability to identify and respond to potential hazards while driving.
Under the new framework, candidates must clear the hazard perception test within 30 days of successfully passing their learner's test. Only those who qualify in this assessment will be permitted to proceed to the subsequent ground and road tests, which form the final stages of the licensing process.
The hazard perception component is designed to evaluate a driver's awareness and decision-making skills in recognizing dangerous situations on the road. This addition represents an effort by the state authorities to strengthen screening mechanisms and reduce traffic accidents caused by poor hazard awareness among new drivers.
The initiative aligns with road safety measures being adopted across India, as state transport departments seek to improve the quality of new drivers entering the road network. Kerala joins other states in implementing perception-based testing to complement the existing theoretical and practical driving examinations.
