The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has launched a coordinated crackdown against illegal taxi operations across the Kochi metropolitan region, with enforcement teams targeting vehicles operating without proper permits and licences.
Four dedicated squads have been positioned in Angamaly, Aluva, Perumbavoor, and Kalady to conduct systematic checks and book violations. The operation has already resulted in penalties exceeding ₹1.47 lakh being imposed on operators flouting traffic regulations and running taxis without valid commercial permits.
The enforcement drive targets vehicles engaged in commercial transportation without authorization, a persistent problem in urban and semi-urban areas of Kerala. Officials are checking documentation and operational credentials as part of efforts to regulate the taxi sector and ensure public safety standards.
The multi-location approach reflects attempts by traffic authorities to address violations across the broader Kochi conurbation rather than limiting checks to the city centre. Authorities have indicated that the operation will continue with regular patrols and inspections to maintain compliance with motor vehicle regulations.
