Kerala transport minister clarifies local bodies not required to fund KSRTC depots

Transport Minister C.P. John has moved to address concerns raised by opposition leadership regarding the financial burden placed on local governmental bodies for maintaining Kerala State Road Transport Corporation depots. In his response, John emphasized that no statutory obligation exists for local authorities to fund KSRTC infrastructure at their respective jurisdictions.

The minister acknowledged that municipalities and corporations with stronger revenue bases than gram panchayats possess greater financial capacity to support local transport infrastructure improvements. However, he stressed that any such contributions would be entirely voluntary in nature, undertaken only when local authorities determine such investments to be necessary for their communities.

The clarification comes as local bodies across Kerala have grappled with competing budgetary priorities and limited resources. By distinguishing between mandatory financial responsibilities and discretionary spending, the transport ministry has sought to relieve pressure on smaller administrative units that lack adequate revenue generation mechanisms.

John's statement effectively separates the operational funding of KSRTC from local civic responsibilities, potentially allowing gram panchayats and smaller local bodies to redirect resources toward other essential services within their purview without fear of penalty or legislative pressure.
