Kerala tweaks degree structure as first FYUGP batch reaches critical point

The Kerala State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) is advancing comprehensive reforms to standardise eligibility criteria for employment across various sectors, aligning them with the new degree structures introduced under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP). As the first batch of students progresses through the reformed curriculum, officials are working to establish clear pathways for graduates pursuing Major, Double Major, and Double Minor qualifications. KSHEC's vice-chairperson outlined the council's efforts to ensure that institutions offering these varied degree tracks are on track to meet upcoming recognition requirements. The reforms aim to prevent potential employment barriers for graduates by securing explicit recognition of the new qualification categories in job specifications issued by both government departments and private organisations. Officials said the regulatory framework being finalised would provide clarity on whether students opt for a three-year exit option or pursue the full four-year honours programme, ensuring both pathways lead to recognized credentials. The initiative reflects growing recognition that curriculum innovation must be accompanied by corresponding changes in recruitment standards to maintain graduate employability across India's competitive job market.
